How to Feed Young Goats

How to Feed Young Goats thumbnail
Young goats can be safely weaned when they are 2.5 times their birth weight.

Young goats go from a milk-only diet to a diet of pasture, hay and feed once they are weaned. Feeding the young goats correctly once they are weaned is critical to their future health and well-being. All feed changes must be made slowly to avoid making the young goat ill. The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs recommends feeding young goats a feed of at least 16 percent protein to meet the needs of a young growing goat.

Things You'll Need

  • Hay
  • Access to pasture
  • 16 percent sweet feed or goat feed

Instructions

    • 1

Provide your young goat access to graze in a pasture at least 6 to 8 hours per day. A goat's digestive system is meant to eat small amounts of food throughout the day. Goats also like to eat small shrubs and trees.

    • 2

Feed the goat at least 1 lb. of fresh grass hay every morning and every evening.

    • 3

Feed your young goat 1 lb. of 16 percent sweet feed or goat feed two times per day during the morning and evening hay feeding. This will need to be gradually increased as the goat matures and ages.

Tips & Warnings

  • Young goats should have access to fresh clean water at all times.

  • Goats must have copper in their diet; be sure to buy a goat feed or supplement that contains copper.

  • Goats should never be fed feeds that get their protein from animal parts.
