How to Get Past the Forest Temple in "Zelda: Ocarina of Time"

"The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time" has six temples you'll have to complete to get access to the final level. The Forest Temple has a ghostly version of Ganon as its guardian, but this creature isn't as tough as the real Ganon. You'll be able to weaken it from a distance at first. Eventually, you'll wear it down enough so that you'll be able to stun it and attack it directly.

Instructions

    • 1

Enter the Forest Temple and you will see four Poes come down and extinguish the torches powering the elevator. You'll need to find and defeat all four Poes to light the torches and restore power to the elevator. Continue to play through the temple until you get the Fairy Bow from a treasure chest.

    • 2

Shoot the paintings containing a Poe with your bow in two separate areas. You'll have to shoot the paintings from a distance. If you approach them, the Poes will vanish from the paintings before you can shoot them. Once you shoot the final painting in an area, the Poe will become tangible, so defeat it using either your sword, bow or hookshot. Defeat the first two Poes, then continue on until you find the puzzle of the third Poe.

    • 3

Arrange the puzzle pieces so that they form an image of a Poe. The Poe will emerge from it; defeat it using the same methods that you used on the first two Poes. Go down to the elevator and you'll start a battle with the final Poe. This Poe can duplicate itself -- watch for the Poe that spins slightly to indicate that it can be damaged, and fire your bow at it until it is defeated. This will light all four torches and power up the elevator.

    • 4

Go down the elevator to reach the boss battle with Phantom Ganon. You will be in a circular room surrounded by portraits, and Ganon will teleport in and out of the portraits to attack you. You'll be able to tell which direction he's coming from by watching the portraits. Keep rotating your vision to look at all of them, as he will sometimes try to trick you by turning around at the last second and emerging from a different portrait.

    • 5

Fire an arrow at Ganon just as he steps out of a portrait. You'll see a swirling purple circle to indicate that he is physical again and can be harmed. He'll retreat to another portrait, so fire at him twice more as he is coming out of them to knock him off his horse. Ganon will then float around the room and shoot lightning balls at you. Target him to keep him in your sights.

    • 6

Use your sword to hit the lightning ball back at Ganon to hurt him. He will be briefly stunned and drop to the ground, so run up to him and attack him with your sword. He may also hit his lightning ball back towards you, which can result in a type of brief ping-pong match between the two of you. Keep hitting it back to him until the ball hits him and stuns him.

    • 7

Dodge Ganon's spinning charge attack, and then hit the lightning ball back at him when he attacks with it again. Attack him when he's stunned. Keep following this pattern until Phantom Ganon is defeated.
