How to Darken Windows During a Drama

How to Darken Windows During a Drama thumbnail
Black garbage bags are useful in darkening windows.

To make a drama successful, the proper lighting is necessary. If your stage or makeshift theater has windows that allow sunlight to stream through, it may be impossible to imagine danger, suspense or the proper time of day during the drama. At other times, you may have window frames mounted on the wall to create the look of a home or building. If you want to enable the scene to look as if it is nighttime, it is important to darken the windows quickly in between scenes.

Things You'll Need

  • Black garbage bags
  • Scissors
  • Measuring tape
  • Strong, clear tape
  • Dark window film

Instructions

  1. Garbage Bags

    • 1

Cut a large, black garbage bag down each side with scissors to form a long rectangle shape.

    • 2

Measure the length and width of the window with the measuring tape.

    • 3

Cut the plastic garbage bag to the measurements.

    • 4

Tape the garbage bags over the window by using strong clear tape. Cover all areas of the glass so that no light peeks through to destroy the ambiance.

    Dark Window Film

    • 5

Read the directions on the window film before purchasing it. They are available in frosted, a stained-glass look, clear that prevents ultraviolet rays from entering the room, and different degrees of darkness. Choose a black window film to darken the drama effectively.

    • 6

Measure the individual panes of each window.

    • 7

Cut the black window film so it fits well over the panes and does not allow sunlight to enter through the window.

    • 8

Place the window film on the window glass. It adheres to the surface by static cling. This is a wise choice for different scenes where you have to remove the window darkening treatment quickly in order to create daytime and nighttime scenes in the same drama. The window film is reusable to save for another drama.

    • 9

Remove the window film from left to right. Some panes are different sizes and this enables you to replace the film quickly from scene to scene.

Tips & Warnings

  • Hang a black, flat bedsheet over the windows with pushpins. Twin-sized flat sheets work well for this.
