Instructions

    • 1

Look at your subject and squint your eyes to see the dark and light areas of your model unless you are working from a photograph. If you are working from a photograph, pick one that has much natural light in it as this will make it easier to draw.

    • 2

Draw the overall shape of the hair and the outline of the head and face. Be aware of the proportions of the head as the head should always be three eye lengths across.

    • 3

Draw the hair into sections. This will make it easier to define the light and dark areas. To figure out how to find the sections of the hair, look at the overall shape and which way the hair is growing, particularly whether it is away from the face and over the face.

    • 4

Place the shading in the light areas, but before you do that create a tonal panel ranging from highlight (white) to dark almost black. This will give you a guide as to which shading will go where.

    • 5

Draw the shading in the darker areas and block in the shading around the face as the hairline creates shadow around the face.

    • 6

Get an eraser to pick out more highlights and step back from your drawing to check that it looks correct.

Tips & Warnings

  • Practice drawing long hair first and then try drawing short hair. Long hair is easier to draw as you can see all the shadows and highlights.
