How to Make Styrofoam Snowflakes

Many people create paper snowflakes, but very few have taken this craft to the next step - styrofoam snowflakes! You can use the snowflakes to decorate your wall for a winter party. Teachers can hang them on their bulletin boards during the winter months. There are plenty of uses for these versatile decorations.

Things You'll Need:

  • Scissors
  • Permanent Marker
  • Thin Piece Of Styrofoam
  • Square Piece Of Paper
  • Box Cutter

Fold the piece of paper diagonally to form a triangle.

Fold the triangle in half. Then fold it in half again.

Cut tiny triangles out of the edges of the folded paper. Do not cut an entire edge, or your paper snowflake will fall apart.

Unfold the piece of paper. This will be the template for your snowflake.

Lay the template over the piece of styrofoam and trace it with the marker.

Remove the paper, and use the box cutter to cut along the lines you've made.

Push out the extra pieces of styrofoam, leaving holes that form the snowflake.

Tip

If you cut bigger triangles out of the paper template, it will be easier to remove the pieces of styrofoam in Step 7. You may need to make a shallow cut, then a deeper cut, and then a very deep cut, in order to cut through the styrofoam.

Warnings:

  • Be very careful when using a box cutter around children.
