Drawing on the computer can be a mess-free activity for children.

Windows operating systems come with a built-in drawing application called MS Paint that can help you make simple drawings and save them as an image file. Unfortunately, Macs do not come with such a native program, but there are a number of free programs that can be downloaded to add this functionality to any Mac. The programs differ in complexity, as some are designed for children or beginners and others support more advanced features such as layers.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a program from the Resources section in this article or another drawing program. Download it to your hard drive.

    • 2

Install the program as per the directions on the developer's site.

    • 3

Click the program's icon in the dock at the bottom of the screen or click its icon in the "Applications" folder in the Finder.

    • 4

Select a drawing tool in the tools palette such as a brush or pencil.

    • 5

Select a color by clicking or double-clicking the color palette and clicking the color you wish to choose.

    • 6

Click and drag on the canvas to begin drawing or painting.

    • 7

Click "File" then "Save" and choose a location to save your file when you are finished.

Tips & Warnings

  • Explore the "Help" menu of your drawing program to learn how to use each of the individual tools in the palette and to use advanced features such as layers.
