How to Fertilize Gardenia "Radicans"

Gardenia "Radicans," commonly called creeping gardenia, is an evergreen plant often used as a ground cover. The gardenia grows no more than 2 feet tall and, like other gardenia plants, boasts fragrant white flowers during summer. Gardenia "Radicans" requires a high level of nutrients to maintain vigor and produce plentiful blooms. Fertilizing with a product designed for acid-loving plants will encourage growth and help keep the gardenia healthy.

Things You'll Need

• Acid-loving plant fertilizer
• Garden fork

Instructions

1. Select a fertilizer intended for acid-loving plants.

2. Read the instructions on the fertilizer carefully to determine exactly how much to apply. The amount varies among products.

3. Broadcast the recommended amount of fertilizer around the gardenia plants, beginning in early spring. Use a garden fork to work the fertilizer into the top layer of soil. Keep the fertilizer away from the stems and foliage because it may cause damage.

4. Water the plant deeply after applying the fertilizer.

5. Repeat the fertilization process once each month, from spring until late summer, unless otherwise indicated on package directions.

6. Apply a liquid iron supplement in June if the leaves start to yellow. Apply exactly as instructed on the package to avoid damaging the plant.

7. Stop fertilizing in late summer so the plants cease active growing before winter's arrival.
