Slide a float onto your main fishing line to set up a float line.

A float line is a basic method of rigging a fishing line with a float. The float rig is often one of the first methods of fishing used by many anglers. The rig allows a hook and bait to be presented at a specific level in the water. A few basic pieces of tackle are used to assemble the float line directly onto the main fishing line.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the wood or plastic peg from a float. Slide the float onto the end of your fishing line. Push the float up the line and insert the peg into the hole in the float to hold in place and out of the way.

    • 2

Tie a bait holder hook onto the end of your fishing line with a uni knot. Moisten the knot and pull it tight against the eye of the hook. Trim excess line extending from the knot with scissors.

    • 3

Place a 1/4 ounce or lighter crimp-on weight on the line. Measure up 18 inches from the hook and crimp on the weight. Use a pair of pliers to help crimp the weight.

    • 4

Remove the peg from the float when you are ready to fish. Slide the float up or down the line to a position that will allow the bait to be presented at the desired level. Place the peg back into the float to secure it in place.
