How to Draw Cartoon Hippos
A hippopotamus is a rotund animal that can often be found in cartoon drawings. It is a relatively simple subject for an artist to draw. By using basic shapes, even a beginning artist can create a cartoon hippo, making it ideal subject matter for someone just learning to draw.

1
Draw your hippo's head by drawing a circle as a guide. Draw an oval on the left side of the circle (your left) that will represent the end of the snout. Draw two side by side circles in this oval for the nostrils, then draw two circles at the very top of the circle for eyes. Draw an arched line over each eye to create the brow of the hippo.

2
Draw a slightly angled oval attached to the outside of the circle, placed just to the right of the right eye (your right). This is a hippo ear. Erase a portion of the large circle at the lower left (your left). This will create an opening for the mouth. The opening can be round or v-shaped (however you want your hippo's open mouth to be).

3
Draw four rectangles in each corner of the mouth for teeth, then draw a curved line inside the mouth to form a tongue for the hippo. Draw a second line below the opening for the mouth that runs along the same path as the lower section of the mouth. Begin the line attached to the lower mouth line, extend it just slightly away from the lower mouth line, then bring it in again as you reach the end of the lower mouth line. This will connect a lower lip to your hippo.

4
Draw a large oval beginning at the back of the hippo's head. This will be the body of the hippo. Draw four tube-shaped elements at the bottom of this oval. There should be two at the front and two at the rear. These are the hippo's legs. Make the bottom of each of these legs straight and draw three or four small ovals extending from each to form the hippo's toenails.
