How to Crochet a Bird Body

How to Crochet a Bird Body thumbnail
One skein of yarn can make multiple bird bodies.

Some animals are more difficult to crochet than others. For example, birds often have tilted, pear-shaped bodies that can prove tricky to crochet. This pattern provides a solution to this problem. This bird body is created using the amigurumi method, in which shapes are achieved by crocheting in the round and formed using increase and decrease stitches. Use a thicker yarn and larger hook for a bigger bird or a finer yarn and smaller hook for a tinier bird.

Instructions

  1. Crochet Techniques Used

    • 1

Make the chain stitch by creating a slipknot and placing the loop on the crochet hook. Catch the yarn and draw it through the loop, dropping the loop as you go. You should have one loop remaining on the hook. This is the first chain stitch. Make all subsequent chain stitches by catching the yarn and drawing it through the loop, dropping the loop as you go

    • 2

Make the single crochet stitch by inserting the hook into a previously made stitch. You should already have one loop on your hook. Catch the yarn and draw it through the stitch, bringing a new loop onto the hook. Catch the yarn again and draw it through the two stitches, dropping them in the process. One new loop should remain on the hook.

    • 3

Make a single crochet decrease by inserting the hook into a previously made stitch. There should already be one loop on your hook. Catch the yarn, draw it through the stitch and bring up a new loop onto the hook. Do the same thing into the next stitch, so that you have three loops on your hook. Catch the yarn again and draw it through the three loops, dropping them as you go. One new loop should remain on the hook.

Make chain stitches. Then make six single crochet stitches into the second chain stitch from the hook. Spread the stitches into a circle and place the stitch marker to indicate the beginning of the round.

    • 5

Make one single crochet stitch into each stitch of the round. On the round, make two single crochet stitches into the first stitch and one single crochet stitch into the next stitch. Repeat this pattern to complete the round. Make one single crochet stitch into each stitch of the next two rounds.

    • 6

Make one single crochet stitch into the first nine stitches of the next round. Then make two single crochet stitches into the next stitch and one single crochet stitch into each of the next two stitches. Repeat this increase pattern to complete the round.

    • 7

Repeat Step 3 three more times, adding one single crochet stitch to the number of stitches worked between the increase stitches. By the third repetition you should work five single crochet stitches between the increase stitches.

    • 8

Make a single crochet decrease over the first two stitches of the next round, then make a single crochet stitch into the next stitch. Repeat this decrease pattern two more times. Then make two single crochet stitches into the next stitch and one single crochet stitch into each of the next six stitches. Repeat this increase pattern to complete the round.

    • 9

Make a single crochet decrease over the first two stitches of the next round, then make a single crochet stitch into the next stitch. Repeat this decrease pattern two more times. Then make one single crochet stitch into each of the next 11 stitches, two single crochet stitches into each of the next two stitches and one single crochet stitch in each remaining stitch of the round.

    • 10

Make a single crochet stitch into each of the first 15 stitches of the next round and two single crochet stitches into each of the next two stitches. Make one single crochet stitch into each of the remaining stitches in the round. On the next round, make a single crochet stitch into each of the first 16 stitches of the next round and two single crochet stitches into each of the next two stitches. Make one single crochet stitch into each of the remaining stitches in the round.

    • 11

Make a single crochet decrease to begin the next round, then make one single crochet stitch into each of the next 15 stitches. Make two single crochet stitches into each of the next two stitches, then make one single crochet stitch into each of the remaining stitches in the round. Repeat this step once.

    • 12

Begin filling the body with the stuffing material. Continue to stuff the body as the work progresses toward the end.

    • 13

Begin the next round by making a single crochet decrease. Make one single crochet stitch into each of the next 14 stitches, make another single crochet decrease and make one single crochet stitch into each remaining stitch in the round.

    • 14

Make a single crochet decrease into the first two stitches of the next round, then make one single crochet stitch into the next stitch. Repeat this pattern to complete the round.

    • 15

Make a single crochet decrease over every two stitches of the next round. Repeat this round one more time. Cut the yarn and draw it through the last loop to fasten off. Weave in the loose ends.
