How to Draw a Chain
Drawing a chain is a wonderful way to explore your creativity. The trick to drawing chains is to make the image look as if each link is interconnected. Indeed, the sky is the limit once you capture how to link each piece on paper. Position a real chain in front of you as inspiration for your drawing. Practice adding different layers to your chain as you progress in mastering your skills.

1
Draw your first flat chain link. Trace a small open-ended, oval shaped loop -- similar to a backwards letter "C". Leave the oval disconnected with a half inch gap. Trace a medium size open-ended, oval shaped loop around the small loop. Space out the small and medium loops by a half inch. The first flat link is now complete.

2
Draw your first vertical chain link. Trace a long rectangle -- two inches long and a half inch high -- on the paper. Draw the rectangle -- with round, soft edges -- so that one third of it is in the open space left by the flat link in step one.

3
Draw your second flat link. Trace one small and one medium face down arc -- separated by a half inch, one atop the other. Begin each arc near the center point on top of the vertical link. Finally, trace one small and one medium face up arc -- separated by a half inch, one atop the other. Begin each arc near the center point on the bottom of the vertical link. Repeat steps two and three until your chain length suits your needs.

4
Repeat step one -- in reverse -- to finish the link. Apply the same "C" shape design -- although position the ovals so the openings are facing the normal direction of a letter "C" and connect it to the last vertical link.
