How to Make a Plant's Pot Look Tuscan

Tuscan gardens feature terra-cotta pots and urns filled with colorful blooms and luscious green foliage. If you want to transform your ordinary patio or garden into an Italian oasis, but have ordinary plant pots, it's easy to paint them to resemble traditional Tuscan planters. Use craft paint and tools to create a weathered or antique appearance to make a plant's pot look Tuscan.

Things You'll Need

  • Terra-cotta pot
  • Large bucket or tub
  • Liquid dish soap
  • Warm water
  • Small bowl
  • Brown acrylic craft paint
  • Paint mixing stick
  • Gold acrylic craft paint
  • Dark teal acrylic craft paint
  • Craft sponge
  • Small piece of crumpled brown-paper bag
  • Paint brush, 1/2-inch

Create Weathered Appearance

  • Soak the terra-cotta pot in a large bucket or tub of warm water and 1 tsp. liquid dish soap overnight. Rinse the soap off the pot, and set the pot in the sun to dry.

  • Pour a small amount of brown acrylic craft paint in a bowl. Add 1 tsp. warm water to the paint, then mix together.

  • Dip a craft sponge into the bowl of watered-down brown paint. Dab the sponge all over the terra-cotta pot to create a weathered appearance.

Create Antiqued Appearance

  • Follow step one in the first section to clean the terra cotta pot.

  • Pour a small amount of dark teal acrylic craft paint in a small bowl. Add 1 tsp. of water, then mix together.

  • Dip the sponge in the watered-down teal paint. Apply the paint to the terra-cotta pot using a dabbing motion. Do not paint the rim of the pot.

  • Pour the gold acrylic craft paint in a small bowl.

  • Apply the gold paint to the rim of the pot with the crumpled piece of brown paper. Use a sweeping motion across the surface of the pot.

Tips & Warnings

  • Mix in a few urn-style planters to give your garden or patio an authentic Tuscan feel.
  • You can use watered-down white or gray paint to give a plant's pot a Tuscan look.
