Windows XP Can Not Delete Software

Windows XP has an automatic removal tool that removes most programs, but it is not always fully effective. This doesn't leave you at a dead end; XP systems contain several other native tools you can utilize to get rid of unwanted software. These built-in utilities are simple enough to manage for all users.

Instructions

    • 1

Click "Start," "All Programs," "Accessories," "System Tools" and then "System Restore."

    • 2

Select the "Restore my computer to an earlier time" option and click "Next." Choose a date prior to the time you were having issues with removing software.

    • 3

Click "Next," then "Next" again. Allow your computer to restore. This repairs the issues that are preventing you from removing the software.

    • 4

Click "Start," "Control Panel" then "Add or Remove Programs." Select the software you wish to remove in the "Currently installed programs" box. Click "Remove." Click "Next" at the onscreen prompts to complete the removal. Proceed to Step 5 if this is not effective.

    • 5

Click "Start," then click "Run." Type "regedit" in the open field and click "OK." Navigate to the following registry path on the left pane of the window:

      "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall"

Locate the software folder that you wish to delete under the "Uninstall" subkey. Right-click the folder and click "Delete." Confirm the deletion. Exit Registry Editor.
