How to Crochet a Coaster

How to Crochet a Coaster thumbnail
It's easy to crochet a set of coasters to use at home.

It's possible to make an entire set of crocheted coasters in a single sitting. This simple and easy pattern is worked in a perfect circle and alternates two coordinating colors for a striped effect. A scalloped perimeter adds a girly touch. Make a set for your home in colors that reflect various seasons: bright blues and greens for summer and muted oranges and reds for fall. Or give the coasters away as a heartfelt gift for new homeowners or newlyweds.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a slipknot near the end of the free strand of the first color of yarn (color A). Insert the hook into the slipknot.

    • 2

Chain three. The chain-three counts as the first half-double crochet. Make 11 more half-double crochets in the third chain from the hook for a total of 12. Slip stitch in the top of the beginning chain-three to join the round. Fasten off.

    • 3

Join the second color (color B) to the last stitch, and chain two. The chain-two counts as the first half-double crochet.

    • 4

Make two half-double crochets in each stitch around. Make one half-double crochet in the first stitch (the same stitch as the chain-two) for a total of 24 half-double crochets. Slip stitch in the top of the beginning chain-two to join the round. Fasten off.

    • 5

Join color A to the last stitch, and chain two. The chain-two counts as the first half-double crochet.

    • 6

Make two half-double crochets in the next stitch, and one half-double crochet in the following stitch. Repeat 10 more times. Make two half-double crochets in the last remaining stitch for a total of 36 half-double crochets. Slip stitch in the top of the beginning chain-two to join the round. Fasten off.

    • 7

Join color B to the last stitch, and chain one. Make a single crochet in the next stitch and three double crochets in the following stitch. You are starting the scalloped edge.

    • 8

Make one single crochet in each of the next two stitches and three double crochets in the following stitch. Repeat 10 more times, and slip stitch in the original chain-one to finish the round. There will be 12 scallops total. Fasten off.

    • 9

Use a yarn needle to weave in all loose ends.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make your stitches tight to avoid gaps in the yarn that will allow moisture to drip through the coaster.

  • Use a synthetic yarn or nylon cord for a coaster that won't become saturated with moisture.

  • Give the coaster a more masculine look by omitting the last scalloped row (Steps 7 and 8).
