How to Fix a Hacked Firefox Browser

Hacking Firefox sounds like a vile thing that a cyber criminal would do to ruin your day. Despite the unsavory sound of it, hacking the browser can be beneficial. Firefox even provides simple access to its configuration file so anyone can do it. Typing "about:config" in the Firefox location bar will give anyone access to tweak, or hack, the browser settings. If your browser has been hacked and you aren't sure how to get it back to normal, you can quickly reset the user preferences, which will undo any changes that have been made to the config file.

Instructions

    • 1

Click "Start" from the Windows desktop and click "All Programs." Click "Mozilla Firefox" to expand the contents of the Firefox folder and click "Mozilla Firefox (Safe Mode)."

    • 2

Click "Reset all user preferences to Firefox defaults" and then click "Continue in Safe Mode." Firefox will now undo any hacks that have been done and reset the settings back to normal.

    • 3

Click "File" and click "Exit" to close Firefox's Safe Mode. Launch the browser normally to begin using it again.

Tips & Warnings

  • Resetting your User Preferences will also remove any themes you've added to the browser, reverting all options back to their original settings.

  • If you're browser is redirecting you to random pages or popping up unwanted windows, your issue is more likely a virus. Install, update and scan with an antivirus application to fix these issues.
