A boutonniere is a common wedding accessory for the male members of the bridal party.

A boutonniere is a common accessory worn by the groom, groomsmen, fathers of the bride and groom, and any other male wedding guests that the couple chooses to honor. These small flowers typically match those carried by the bridesmaids, and add a pretty accessory to otherwise standard formal attire. Pinning a boutonniere can be a bit tricky; it has to be done properly because no one wants to be stuck by the pin holding the flower in place.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the flower by its stem, facing away from the person you're pinning it onto. Ensure that the flower and any accompanying greenery are neatly arranged. You'll be pinning the boutonniere on his left lapel.

    • 2

Place the boutonniere at a slight angle (toward the shoulder) on the lapel of the coat, approximately four inches from the left shoulder of the person wearing it.

    • 3

Stick the pin into the underside of the lapel on the bottom left corner of the stem.

    • 4

Push the pin approximately one inch up from under the fabric. Position it so that it's slanting over the stem.

    • 5

Push the pin back into the fabric on the other side of the stem, making sure that the stem is held tightly in place. (The pin should be woven through the fabric, not through the stem.)

    • 6

Stick the pin out through the fabric once more. Check whether you can see the pin. If you've positioned it correctly, it shouldn't be visible.
