How to Sew a Burp Cloth

How to Sew a Burp Cloth thumbnail
Sew a burp cloth to protect your clothing.

Protect your clothing from your baby's spit-up after feeding by sewing a few burp cloths. Use a cloth diaper or other absorbent fabric, such as a flour sack towel, for the lining of the burp cloth. Pick brightly colored cotton flannel for the outside of the fabric. The flannel will grip your clothing when you use the burp cloth so it won't slide off of your shoulder.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • Scissors
  • 3-ply cloth diaper
  • 1/2 yard flannel fabric
  • Straight pins
  • Matching thread
  • Sewing machine
  • Iron and ironing board

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the cloth diaper so that it measures 10 inches by 24 inches. Cut two pieces of flannel that measure 10 inches by 24 inches.

    • 2

Place one piece of flannel on top of the diaper, right-side up. Lay the other piece of flannel on top of the diaper/flannel piece, right-side down. Pin the pieces together along all four sides.

    • 3

Sew the flannel pieces and diaper together with a 1/2-inch seam. Leave 4 inches open on one side so you can turn the fabric right-side out.

    • 4

Trim the corners and turn the burp cloth right-side out. Use the tips of the scissors to push the corners out.

    • 5

Iron the cloth so that it is flat. Iron the opening so that the raw edges stay tucked under.

    • 6

Top stitch around all four edges of the burp cloth to close the opening. Sew a row of stitches down the center of the cloth to hold the three layers together.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wash the diaper and flannel before sewing to reduce shrinkage after the project's finished.
