How to Crochet an L Shape

Crochet an L shape using single crochet stitches.

Create an L-shaped letter using a single crochet stitch. The single crochet stitch is the basis for more complicated stitches and is an ideal stitch for beginners. The process is the same no matter which crochet stitch you use. The main objective is to learn how to make the two sides of the L in one piece. Use a size K crochet hook to practice making a crochet L with yarn. The size K crochet hook is sometimes labeled 10 1/2 and 6 1/2 mm. The particular label on the crochet hook does not alter the way the stitches will look when complete.

Instructions

    • 1

Tie a slip knot 3 inches from the end of the yarn. Make the slip knot by crossing the yarn and making a 1-inch loop. Reach through the 1-inch loop with your thumb and forefinger. Pinch the long yarn between your thumb and forefinger. Pull the long yarn through the loop. Pull the short 3-inch end tight. This technique forms a knot around the loop, thus creating a slip knot.

Slip the slip knot over the hook end of the crochet hook. Continue to slide the loop down the shaft approximately 1/2 inch. Loop the yarn over the hook. Slide the front loop through the back loop taking the back loop off the end of the crochet hook. You have just made your first chain stitch. Repeat the process for a total of 16 chain stitches.

Flip the crochet chain so it is pointing to the left (to the right if you are left handed). Insert the tip of the crochet hook through the top loop in the second chain from the working end. Wrap the long yarn around the hook. Pull the loop through the chain stitch. You now have two loops on the hook. Slide both loops back approximately 1/4 inch. Wrap the long yarn around the hook. Pull the loop through the two loops on the shaft. You have just made a single crochet stitch. Repeat this process across the chain for a total of 15 stitches.

Flip the crocheted strip so it is pointing to the left (to the right if you are left handed). Chain one stitch. Insert the hook in the top of the second single crochet stitch from the row below. Single crochet across the row 13 more times. The chain stitch at the beginning of each row counts as one stitch. Repeat this process for a total of five rows.

Flip the crocheted strip so it is pointing to the left (to the right if you are left handed). Chain one stitch. Single crochet in the next five stitches. Chain one. Repeat the process for a total of 15 rows. You have created an L shape.

Complete the last stitch. Cut the yarn 3 inches from the hook. Pull the loop on the crochet hook all the way through until the end of the yarn appears. Pull the end tight to form a knot at the end of your crochet.

Weave the two exposed ends through the end rows of single crochet. Cut off any excess yarn.
