How to Draw Anime Noses & Mouths

How to Draw Anime Noses & Mouths thumbnail
Anime characters are easier to draw than live models.

Anime is short for "animation." There is no official start date for anime; it originated in Japan and was pioneered by Osamu Tezuka. He started a series called Tetsuwan Atomu (Astro Boy) that became very popular. Osamu started working in comics in 1947. In Japan, manga refers to both animation and comics, whereas English speakers refer to anime as Japanimation. There are a number of anime cartoons on TV today, such as Pokemon and Sailor Moon.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a realistically proportioned head -- just a simple, egg-shaped oval divided vertically with a line so the face can be drawn symmetrically. A line to mark the eyes should be halfway up, no higher.

    • 2

Refine the shape of the head by sharpening the chin so the jaw begins abruptly below the eye level.

    • 3

Sketch in the eyes by drawing big rectangles with small circles for the irises and the pupils. Draw on the lashes and make them big, bold and thick with a downward turn at the outer edges.

    • 4

Draw a nose midway between the points where the jaw begins. Simply draw two small curved lines to represent the nostrils, or if the face is in profile draw a sloped small triangle to represent the nose.

    • 5

Draw the mouth, keeping it small and simple. The only thing that should be big on the face is the eyes; everything else should be small. Draw one curved line and the letter "m" above the curved line to show the lips, or draw an oval shape and shade the upper half of the oval shape to show the mouth.

    • 6

Add simple lines for the eyebrows, and draw the hair in sections or shapes rather than drawing each individual strand.

Tips & Warnings

  • Practice drawing different anime characters, and also start creating some of your own.
