How to Cut the End of a Rope

How to Cut the End of a Rope thumbnail
Fraying weakens the integrity of your rope.

When you need to cut a length of rope, it's important to get the amount that you want while simultaneously making sure the rope doesn't fray at the end. Most ropes are made of twisted fiber or woven fibers, either synthetic or natural, threaded with a synthetic core, and if left untreated after they are cut, they will unravel. When cutting rope, pay attention to the kind of rope you're working with.

Instructions

    • 1

Mark with a pencil the spot where you want to cut the rope.

    • 2

Push the sharp edge of the knife to the mark. Direct the knife's sharp edge away from your body.

    • 3

Bring the two ends of the rope to either side of the knife and pull, cutting the rope neatly through pressure.

    • 4

Wrap the 6 inches at the end tightly with a length of duct tape. This holds the fibers of the rope tightly and prevents fraying. This method may be used for both synthetic ropes and ropes made of natural fibers.

Tips & Warnings

  • Singe the end of a synthetic rope with a lighter, allowing the plastic to burn and melt. Cool it in water and afterward, the rope will not fray.

  • If you singe the end of a synthetic rope with a lighter, make sure you're working over a nonflammable surface, and be careful to avoid drops of the melting synthetic material. It can cause severe burns.
