How to Get Rid of Bad Tasting Burps

Sour, bad tasting burps are an unfortunate side-effect of indulging in a large meal or eating the meal too quickly. The burps are caused by indigestion, which occurs because a meal is consumed quickly or is full of greasy foods, smoking, stress, over consumption of carbonated soda and liquor and the use of some medications. The burps are often accompanied by bloating, stomach pain, nausea and a burning sensation in the upper abdomen, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Remedies

Step 1

Take an over-the-counter antacid, such as Tums, Mylanta or Alka-Seltzer. These medications work by neutralizing the acids in your stomach that are causing the bad tasting burps. Take the medication according to the package directions. Take an over-the-counter medication that blocks the production of the stomach acids that lead to sour burps and indigestion. According to the Mayo Clinic, medications such as Prilosec, Prevacid and Zegerid are available to help people with longer term indigestion or gastrointestinal reflux disease.

Step 2

Take any medications that will irritate the stomach with food. If the medications are being consumed with food and are still causing indigestion, speak to your doctor about the possibility of a switch to a drug that is less irritating.

Step 3

Drink a cup of peppermint tea. The warm, soothing tea will help settle the stomach and relieve the sour gas.

Step 4

Cover your next meal with a coating of black pepper. Black pepper will reduce the production of intestinal gasses that are causing the sour belches and indigestion.

Step 5

Consume meals more slowly. A major cause of indigestion and bad tasting burps is food that is consumed too quickly and cannot be digested fast enough. Relax, enjoy the meal and chew your food. Eat meals in a calm, stress free environment. Avoid eating on the go and instead sit down and eat the food in a happy, relaxed place.

Step 6

Avoid the consumption of carbonated beverages and quit smoking. Both of these habits cause excess air to enter the stomach, which will lead to sour tasting belches.
