How to Chum for Lake Trout

How to Chum for Lake Trout thumbnail
Use chum to attract more trout to your fishing area.

Chumming, or broadcasting bait in a body of water, causes trout to gather in the area where bait is spread, making them easier to catch. If you notice trout in a nearby lake, you can make a batch of chum with common groceries to increase your chances of fishing success. Before using chum, check your state's fishing regulations; chumming is considered littering in some states.

Instructions

    • 1

Pour cans of sweet corn into a bucket.

    • 2

Break bread into small chunks and add them to the corn to soak up the juice.

    • 3

Choose a fishing spot near large logs or rocks, where trout are likely to hide.

    • 4

Spread the chum slowly on the water 15 to 30 feet away from where you plan to fish.

    • 5

Add a piece of soaked bread to your fishing hook and cast a line once fish start to gather around the chum.

    • 6

Add more chum slowly once the action dies down. The trick is to keep the trout interested without overfeeding them, which causes them to lose interest.

Tips & Warnings

  • To attract stubborn trout, spray trout attractant on the chum before spreading it.
