Instructions

    • 1

Read publications about the Amish and those written by the Amish. While the Amish don't use the Internet, some Amish communities have newspapers. If you read the papers, you can get a grasp of and a feel for the vernacular of the Amish and the types of word choice that they use. Also, scholarly publications and books about the Amish culture will explain the Amish views on the world, and it can give you a better insight as to the types of language that the Amish will use in conversation.

    • 2

Interact with the Amish and listen to them talk. Amish might allow themselves to be recorded in some circumstances, but it doesn't happen often. Remain respectful, and be polite if you want to engage the Amish in conversation for any length of time.

    • 3

Practice speaking with the same tone, accent and word choice that you've heard the Amish use. As with any language or dialect, it requires practice and study to get a feel for the word choice and sound. Practice for at least a half-hour a day if you're serious about learning the dialect.
