A Lesson on How to Draw a Face
Drawing is a hobby that can take hours before you create a picture that you are happy with. Sometimes, however, you might work on a drawing only to find that it doesn't look quite right. This can happen often when it comes to drawing faces. When you draw a face, you must capture the subject's distinguishing features to achieve a successful work of art. Pay attention to shapes and proportions for an accurate face drawing.

1
Sketch a basic outline of the face with your pencil using your reference picture for help. The general shape of the face will be oval.
-
2
Draw two lines on the oval. The first line will go from side to side at the middle of the oval to indicate where the eyes will be. The other line will go up and down following where the nose will be. These lines will guide you as you draw the features of the face.

3
Add more basic shapes to rough out the features of the face, such as a circle for the ear, thin rectangles for eyebrows. This will help you see exactly where the features will go and how much space they will take up on the face.
-
4
Begin sketching more detail over the light shapes. Add to the face using the reference picture for help. Remember to draw what you see on the reference, not what you think a nose or mouth or other feature looks like according to your memory. This will make your drawing more accurate.

5
Put finishing touches on the face drawing. Shade to add contrast, and complete the drawing with any last details you see in the reference photo.

Draw lightly at first to get a basic idea of the face, then eventually build on that with more layers.
