Decorate an old vintage suitcase to use when you travel or serve as part of your home decor. The way you decorate the suitcase will depend on the purpose you want it to serve. For example, too many dainty decorations might fall off the suitcase if you plan to use it for travel, whereas they would be fine if the suitcase sits on a shelf in your living room.
Things You'll Need
- Mild cleanser
- Craft paint
Clean the suitcase so your decorations will stick. Use a mild soap and water solution on a vinyl suitcase or a mild leather treatment if the suitcase is made of leather.
Add stickers, rhinestones, beads or other embellishments to the suitcase to create a design that reflects your personality or decor. For example, add stickers that look like postcards or feature landmarks from places you've visited. You can use the old suitcase as a memory board of sorts. Spell out your initials with rhinestone stickers if you want bling. Personalize your old suitcase with stickers that display your favorite bands, sports teams or clothing brands.
Paint a custom design directly on your old suitcase if that's more your style and you have the artistic ability. For example, paint a bouquet of your favorite flowers or an image of a majestic butterfly if those are some of your favorite things. Use craft paints that are safe for the material the suitcase is made of.
Refinish the inside of the suitcase if you plan to use it to display decorative items in your home or if it would damage your clothes in its current condition. Cut a piece of fabric so it's slightly larger than the interior of the suitcase. Fold the edges under and glue them in place with fabric glue so there are no rough edges showing. Glue the fabric to the inside of the suitcase with a fast-drying glue.
Stack three or four old suitcases of varying sizes and colors on top of each other to serve as a coffee table or open a small vintage suitcase on a shelf or table to show off a decorative arrangement. For example, include a teddy bear, fake strand of pearls, doll, dress and hat and gloves for a little girl's Victorian-themed bedroom.
