How to Mount a Fish Finder to a Kayak

Catch more fish by installing a fish finder on your kayak.

Target and locate your favorite game fish by equipping your kayak with a fish finder device. Fish finders aren't just for big fishing boats. If you fish with a kayak, you can install the device by positioning the transducer at the bottom or hull of the boat. A fish finder uses sonar signals to detect and show underwater structures and fish underneath the kayak.

Things You'll Need

  • Fish finder with transducer and assembly parts
  • Transducer bracket or cradle
  • Drill and bit
  • Marine grease
  • Scrub
  • Adhesive seal
  • Primer
  • Dry bag

Instructions

    • 1

Install the control head on a stable mounting surface in your kayak. Choose a spot where the device will be protected from excessive vibration and wave shock. Attach the mounting bracket by drilling mounting screw holes with a 9/64-inch bit. Route the cable through the mounting bracket then fill the bracket mounting holes with marine grade silicone. Insert four countersink wood screws into the mounting hole, then tighten.

Choose a spot for the transducer inside the hull of your kayak. This can be in the center or in the lower part of the boat. Mount the transducer parallel to the water line so that it can point down and effectively send and receive sonar signals. Prepare the mount location by scuffing it with a scrub, then prime the area with a tube primer. Allow the primer to dry completely, then attach the transducer bracket using an adhesive seal. Let the adhesive cure for 24 hours, then drop marine grease into the center of the bracket. Put enough grease to cover the bottom and inner sides. Place the transducer into the bracket and wiggle side-to-side to lessen air bubbles. If the bracket came with straps, use them to secure the transducer.

Place the fully charged battery inside a dry bag, then pull the power cable out. Seal the bag, roll it down and close the buckle. Put the dry bag inside the hull on a flat and stable surface.

Route the cables and assemble the connector holder. Install the connector holder and attach to the mounting bracket using screws, then tighten. Slide the control head into the mounting bracket.
