How to Draw a Whale for Kids

How to Draw a Whale for Kids thumbnail
Whales are easy to draw because of their broad, basic shape.

Illustrating a whale is an excellent beginner's art lesson for children. Whales have large bodies formed by basic lines, and do not require fine detail. By organizing the project in a series of elementary steps, children should have no trouble drawing a whale. Since the appearance of a whale is generalized to make this project appropriate for children, precision is not necessary. Even if the young artist does not draw each individual line to match the description in the steps, he should still be able to craft a whale.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a vertical, slightly curved line on the left side of the page. Begin another line at the top of the vertical line. Curve it around to the right, then pull it down. Begin a third line at the end of the vertical line. Curve it down, around to the right until it is half as long as the second line. This is the beginning of the whale's body.

    • 2

Draw a short line straight up from the endpoint of the whale's back. Curve it to the right at the end. Draw a short diagonal line down and away from the previous endpoint. Both lines should be equally long. This is the beginning of the tail.

    • 3

Draw a short, curved, diagonal line down and away. Begin the line at the endpoint for the right tail line. Draw a longer, curved line back to the endpoint of the first tail line to complete the tail fin.

    • 4

Place the pencil in the center of the whale's lower body line. Draw down and to the right in a curve. The line should resemble a smile, and it should extend a little further than the bottom body line. This is the whale's mouth.

    • 5

Draw a short, diagonal line down and away from the endpoint of the mouth. Form a curved tip and draw a shorter line up. It should end in line with the previous line. This is the whale's flipper.

    • 6

Draw a slightly curved line from the endpoint of the flipper line to the tail to complete the whale's body. Draw a tiny rounded triangle to the immediate left of the flipper. This triangle should point down and away. It is the flipper on the other side of the chest.

    • 7

Extend the middle mouth line further into the whale's body. Curve it up so the whale is smiling. Add a short curved dash to the end of the line.

    • 8

Leave some space and draw another, slightly longer, curved dash. Draw a tall arch from one end of the curve to the other. This is the whale's eye. Color in the eye but leave a tiny circle uncolored to make the eye appear rounded.

    • 9

Draw a small, filled-in circle at the top of the whale, just under its top line. Keep the circle in line wit the eye. This is the blowhole. Draw three upside-down teardrop shapes above the whale, centered over the blowhole, to make the whale look like it has just spouted water.
