How to Make a Body of a Volcano
Whether performing a kitchen experiment or preparing for an elementary school science fair project, building a volcano from papier mache is an appropriate option for body construction. Other options include making a poster board cone, an edible rice krispie or cocoa krispie volcano or using play dough or clay. If creating an erupting volcano, don't forget to insert a 2-liter or 20-ounce soda bottle to hold the lava solution.

1
Place a 2-liter soda bottle in the center of a disposable aluminum baking pan and surround it with crumpled newspaper sheets. Layer the newspaper balls to appear as if the top of the soda bottle is the volcano's opening. Use tape as necessary to secure the crumpled newspaper together in a mountainous shape.

2
Combine 1 cup of flour and 1 cup of water in a mixing bowl and stir until smooth to make a papier mache mixture. Rip long strips of newspaper, dip each into the papier mache solution and pull the strip through your index finger and thumb to remove the excess.

3
Layer the newspaper strips over the crumpled newspaper mountain, alternating the strip direction to gain maximum coverage. Fill in the gaps with additional papier mache strips to make the volcano's sides appear downward arching.
-
4
Allow the volcano to dry for two to three days or until completely dry. Paint the volcano with brown acrylic paint and place in a safe area until the paint is dry.
