Brick fireplaces have a very distinct look, and after awhile that look can seem a little boring or plain. Sponge painting is a technique that gives the finished product a colorful, textured appearance. While the technique of sponge painting is quite simple, knowing which types of primer and paint to use to avoid heat damage is important. Water-based paints like acrylic aren't a good choice unless the fireplace is never or hardly used. To paint a fireplace that is often used, oil-based paints are the best choice.   • Oil based primer
  • Oil based paints or acrylic paints in color/colors of choice
  • Small paint trays
  • Large sponge

      Give the brick fireplace two thick, even coats of oil-based primer to prepare it for the paint job. Allow the primer to dry completely.

      Pour the oil- or water-based paint of your choice into small paint trays, separated by color. You can choose to use one color or multiple colors.

      Dip a thick sponge that is damp but not wet into the paint of choice and scrape off excess paint on the side of the tray. Make gentle stamping motions all over the brick fireplace to sponge on the color. If you are using more than one color, make sure you have a sponge for each color.
