How to Install Software Without Group Policy

Although group policy can help to restrict software installations, a system without a group policy is free to install many different software items without being confined by policy restrictions. Without group policy to specifically allow or deny an action, you must run the installer as an administrator to ensure the program is properly registered. Both "MSI" and "EXE" files act as installers on Windows and can be used to register a program on your hard drive.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the installation disc or obtain the installation file for your program.

    • 2

Open the Start menu and click "Computer." Navigate to the location where the setup file is contained by double-click the appropriate drive and locating the setup file. On discs, this is usually located in the first folder of the drive and labeled "setup.exe."

    • 3

Right-click the setup file, and then click "Run as administrator." Provide your administrator password, if prompted. This ensures all installers will run with sufficient rights to the system.

    • 4

Proceed through your installer's on-screen setup process until it completes.
