How to Save a Vector Image in Illustrator

In contrast to pixel-base raster images, vector images are composed of lines, fill colors and instruction on how the graphic should be displayed. Even after vector graphics have been rendered and packed into a file, you can go back and edit the file's lines and colors. If you're working with vector graphics in Illustrator, you'll need to export your project in a vector image format if you think you might have to make adjustments to the graphic later on.

Step 1

Launch Adobe Illustrator. Select the "Open" option at Illustrator's welcome screen to load the project you wish to export into a vector graphics format.

Click on the "File" heading in Illustrator's main menu. Click on the "Export" option in the menu that appears below the "File" heading.

Step 3

Click on the "Save As Type" menu box when the "Export" menu appears. Click on the menu box's "Flash (SWF)" option if you intend to use the vector image in a flash project. Otherwise, select the "Enhanced Metafile (EMF)" option from the menu box.

Step 4

Browse through the "Export" menu's folder tree to select an output folder for your vector image. Type a name for the image into the "Export" menu's "File name" field.

Step 5

Click on the "Export" menu's "Save" button to turn your Illustrator project into a vector image file.
