How to Make Your Own File Divider Tab

Save

Regardless of whether you work in a large office or are self-employed at home, organizing the filing cabinet is vital. The easiest way to keep the files in good shape and to ensure they are easy to find is to make a number of tabbed dividers so each section can be sectioned off. Making these at home is very simple and only takes a couple of minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • A4 cardstock
  • Scissors
  • Pen
  • Glue
  • Plastic tab protectors
  • Sticky back plastic
  • Organize your filing cabinet to work out how many tabs you will need and buy a corresponding number of sheets of cardstock.

  • Cut tabs out of one of the pieces of cardstock that are about 1½ inches in length and ½ inch high.

  • Arrange these tabs on the long side of the card file dividers. Stagger the tabs so the first one is on the far left and the last one is on the far right. This will make locating sections easier.

  • Attach the tabs to the card using a small dab of glue and leave to dry.

  • Write the name of the file sections on the divider tab. For example, Tax Returns.

  • Slide a protective plastic sleeve over the tab. These can be bought from any good office supplies store. Alternatively cover the tabs, or the entire divider, in sticky back plastic. Either of these will make the divider more durable.
