Make Rolled Beeswax Candles

Beeswax foundation is a cream color with cells stamped into the wax. Beeswax foundation is what is used in the hive for bees to build comb. It's 100 percent pure beeswax and makes elegant candles. Craft wax looks like comb with bee cells, comes in many colors and may contain paraffin.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Choose the correct size of wick for the size of candle you wish to make. Candles made from 1/2 sheet of craft wax use an 18-ply, flat braided wick. Two-inch-diameter candles use 24-ply, flat braided wick. Increase the wick size as the candle size increases.

  2. Step 2

Measure the length of wick needed: the length of the finished candle plus 1/2 inch. Leave 1/4 inch of wick at each end of the candle.

  3. Step 3

Bring the wax sheet to around 80 degrees F to prevent cracking when rolled.

  4. Step 4

Lay the wick on the wax.

  5. Step 5

Crimp the edge of the wax over the wick.

  6. Step 6

Roll the sheet of wax tightly and evenly.

  7. Step 7

Smooth the end of the wax sheet over the ends of the candle.

  8. Step 8

Heat an old pie pan in the oven.

  9. Step 9

Clip the bottom wick even with the candle.

  10. Step 10

Run the bottom of the candle over the hot pan. This will leave the bottom of the candle smooth.

Tips & Warnings
  • To add another sheet of wax, attach a second strip near the end of the first strip of wax by pressing the two ends together.
  • As beeswax candles age, they develop a cloudy film on their surface called "bloom." Remove bloom by warming wax with a hair dryer - be careful not to hold the dryer too close to the candle for too long, or you'll melt it.
