How to Register a UK Domain Name From the US

If you do business or have connections in the United Kingdom, it may be worthwhile to register a .uk domain name. Using a .co.uk, .org.uk or .me.uk domain identifies your website with the United Kingdom, something that is typically not as easy to do for most Americans. The process for registering a UK domain is the same as for other common domain extensions such as .com and only takes a few minutes.

Open a Web browser and navigate to your domain registrar's website. Nominet, the organization in charge of UK domain names, offers a list of accredited UK registrars on its website if you don;t already have a preferred registrar. The nonprofit Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) also provides a list of accredited registrars on its website. ICANN does not accredit UK domain name registrars, but many of its registrars offer domain registration in the United Kingdom.

Select an available UK domain using the search bar on the registrar's homepage. Use the drop-down menu to select the desired UK domain extension. No one can register a .uk top-level domain, but individuals have access to three second-level domains -- .co.uk, .org.uk and .me.uk. The first is by far the most popular with businesses and individuals in the UK. The .org.uk domain is meant for nonprofit organizations, while .me.uk is for personal websites, although anyone can register these names regardless of planned use.

No rules prohibit Americans from registering UK domains, but not all U.S. registrars offer .co.uk, .org.uk or .me.uk names. You may need to use a different registrar if your current provider does not offer domain name registration in the United Kingdom.

Click "Register" when you've selected a domain name. You may need to search for several different choices as many UK domains are already taken. You can register a UK domain name for up to ten years, but the minimum is two years. You can renew the domain within six months of the expiration date.
