An expensive parking ticket can pack a punch to your wallet. Parking tickets can cost more than $100 depending on the offense. If you get a parking ticket in New York City, you have a few options to request a hearing and dispute the ticket. Make sure to document the ticket and the area you parked to have a chance of winning your dispute.

Instructions

    • 1

Look over the ticket closely for any errors. Check your name and the vehicle information on the ticket to see if everything is accurate. If the ticket is defective, under New York law, you might get the ticket dismissed.

    • 2

Decide on your defense before moving your car. If you did nothing illegal, take pictures of where your car is parked. If you are a delivery driver ticketed for parking in a delivery area, save the receipt from the delivery. If you parked illegally because of a medical emergency, get documentation from the hospital. In New York, you have 30 days to dispute the ticket.

    • 3

Request a hearing. You can do so online, or in mail by returning the New York parking ticket to the address listed on the ticket with the "not guilty" box checked.

    • 4

Attend the hearing, which you can request by phone, on the web or in person. Give your evidence. Not that when you request a hearing online, you cannot submit pictures or other documents.

    • 5

Appeal the decision within 30 days by filing an appeal application. The appeal application is available online.
