How to Change USPS Account Types

USPS, the United States Postal Service, offers two primary account types -- business and personal. The personal account, called "household," is recommended for day-to-day mailing tasks such as buying stamps, sending occasional packages and tracking your shipments. The "business" account offers additional perks, such as the ability to negotiate a fixed mailing cost, dedicated business customer support, address verification tools and customizable receiving and return options. The only option for changing a USPS account type is to create a new account and log in to the desired account.

Use your Internet browser to navigate to USPS.com.

Click the "Sign In" link at the top-right corner of the Web site. At this point, you're given the option to "sign in" to an existing account or "sign up" for a new account. Click the sign-up button.

Follow the "New User Sign Up" wizard to create the new account. This process starts with entering a user name and password and establishing a security question. Next check the radio button for personal or business to indicate the type of account you want to create. Fill in your name, e-mail, phone and address information to complete the "contact information page." Click the "continue" button.

Verify the information you've entered, and click "edit" to fix any errors, or click "continue" to move forward with the account set up.

Read the USPS terms of service, click "yes," and click the "continue" button. Your new account is now set up. Press the "Sign Out" link at the top right of the page to leave this account and change to another USPS account by clicking the "Sign In" button.
