You might not be as skilled at mining as the dwarfs in Snow White, but you can still dress like them for your next costumed event. The clothing is fairly simple, and you can add accessories to express your own interpretation of the individuals from the story and movie.

Costume Basics

Video of the Day

Things You'll Need

  • Tan or brown pants

  • Long-sleeved T-shirt

  • Belt

  • Buttons

  • Cardboard (optional)

  • Ribbon (optional)

To replicate the movie version of the seven dwarfs, start with tan or brown pants, tights or leggings. Top them with a long-sleeved T-shirt or with a tunic decorated with large buttons. Finish the outfit with a wide belt. If you don't have a belt in the right style, add a cardboard buckle to a piece of 3-inch ribbon that you fasten around your waist with hook-and-loop tabs or snaps. You can also make buttons from cardboard for an exaggerated size of adornment. Dopey's clothing was several sizes too large and too long, so keep that in mind.

Hair and Beards

Things You'll Need

  • Hair color spray

  • Sun visor

  • Halloween cobwebs or batting

  • Glue

  • Shoestrings, ribbon or elastic

Other than the bald and clean-shaven youngster, Dopey, the dwarfs in the movie had white hair and beards. Use spray-in hair color to tint your tresses. For a simple homemade beard, cover a foam sun visor with Halloween cobwebs or quilt batting and a little craft glue. Tie the visor with shoestrings or ribbon or add a bit of elastic to hold it in place.

Head Covers

Things You'll Need

  • Santa hat

  • Fabric glue or fusible webbing

  • Felt

While you can wear a plain knitted cap, make it even more authentic by removing the pompom from a store-bought Santa hat that you've covered with felt or another fabric. You can glue the fabric in place or use fusible webbing to attach fabric and base. If you choose Dopey as your subject, be sure to add large ears made from felt or other flesh-colored fabric. Hook them over your own ears or attach them to your hat.

Accessories for All

Things You'll Need

  • Toy or real pickax

  • Mattock

  • Lantern

  • Cloth swag bag

  • Dustpan (optional)

  • Whisk broom (optional)

The seven dwarfs worked in a diamond mine, so carry along a pickax, a mattock or a lantern, as well as a bag filled with craft store glass "gems." In one movie scene, Dopey sweeps up loose stones with a whisk broom and dustpan, so use these as quick accompaniments to your costume.

Personalized Touches

Things You'll Need

  • Musical instruments

  • Pillow

  • Glasses

  • Tissues

Make sure everyone knows which dwarf you represent with some individual accessories. Each of the dwarfs had a different musical instrument during some of the scenes, so carry a mandolin or lute for Sneezy, a flute for Sleepy, a cello or bass for Doc, a concertina for Bashful or a bugle for Happy. Make the connections more obvious by adding a pillow for Sleepy or a box of tissues for Sneezy, and don't forget Doc's reading glasses.
