How to Make a Lasso Rosary

The lasso, or "lazzo," rosary is a double rosary traditionally used in wedding ceremonies throughout the American Southwest and is frequently used in Latin American wedding ceremonies. One complete rosary goes around the bride and the other goes around the groom, uniting the two together in Christ. Making a lasso rosary requires you to make two separate rosaries and then join them together with one final decade and a crucifix.

Things You'll Need

  • 100 inches nylon cord
  • 120 plastic beads
  • 1 large plastic center bead
  • Clear nail polish
  • Scissors
  • Knotting tool
  • Plastic or metal crucifix
  • Measuring tape

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the nylon cord into two 60-inch pieces. Measure 8 inches from the end of one piece and tie a knot with the knot tying tool. Place 10 beads on the longer end of the cord for the first decade. A decade consists of one large bead and 10 small beads.

    • 2

Tie a knot in the cord with the knot tying tool, just above the last of the 10 beads but far enough away to allow the beads to be moved as you pray. Place one bead above the knot you just tied for the "Our Father." Tie another knot tightly against this bead so that it cannot be moved.

    • 3

Continuing adding 10 beads, the knots and the single bead until you have completed the five decades required of the rosary. The rosary will end in a single bead with a tight knot at the end.

    • 4

Repeat the process for making a rosary for the second length of 60-inch nylon cord so that you have two separate rosaries.

    • 5

Thread the two ends of each separate rosary through the large center bead. Secure the center bead in place with a tight knot. The two separate rosaries will now be joined.

    • 6

Place 10 beads onto the joined strands and then secure them with a knot. Add one more single bead and knot it in place.

    • 7

Connect the plastic crucifix by threading the ends of the nylon cords through the hole in the top of the crucifix and creating a knot in the back with the knotting tool.

Tips & Warnings

  • Choose beads that are large enough to accommodate the thickness of four strands of the nylon cord you are using.

  • Coating the ends of the nylon cord in clear nail polish will make it easier to thread the beads.
