It is useful to know what version of "World of Warcraft" you are using to see if any downloadable add-ons will be compatible when you play. If the automatic updater doesn't work, then you can download the patches manually and install them on your own. Keep your "World of Warcraft" game current to avoid any technical errors that will cause the game to crash.

Download the client downloader (see Resources). Double-click the installer to start downloading game files. Downloading the patch files may take several hours, depending on your Internet connection.

Install the "World of Warcraft" files to your hard drive. If you have trouble installing any of the files, then you may download other versions located on mirror sites. It may be faster to download from these mirror sites.

Open "World of Warcraft" and watch the opening cinematic for the game. When you arrive at the login screen you will find what version of the game you are playing in the form of numbers in the lower-left corner of the screen. According to Blizzard, the latest major update to "World of Warcraft" is patch 4.0.3a as of March 27, 2011.

Tips

The quickest way to update your "World of Warcraft" game version is to log into the game, which will force you to update if you are not current. Uninstalling the game and reinstalling it will also install the newest version if you are connected to the Internet.
