How to Draw Line Segments for Grade 2
Drawing a line is an easy activity. Give toddlers pencils and paper, and they will drag the pencils across the paper, making squiggly lines of sorts. The difference between that and showing a child how to draw a line segment is that the child is introduced to the geometric concept of a line and is taught is how to draw a straight line using a ruler. Introducing geometric facts and concepts to children in the second grade makes them comfortable with the study of geometry.

1
Mark two dots on the paper, slightly spaced apart. Name them A and B.
-
2
Connect the dots with a straight line. Make sure that the line does not extend beyond the dots.
-
-
3
Explain that you have just drawn the line segment AB.
-
4
Mark another two dots spaced slightly apart. Call them C and D. Connect the dots extending the line beyond them in both directions. Call the line CD", and show how it is written with a double-headed arrow placed above the name.
-
5
Teach the difference between a line segment and a line. A line segment has a defined beginning and an end. A line goes on forever in both directions. Explain that this is why the line is written with a double-headed arrow, to symbolize that it continues without end.
