How to Make a Leather Collar
Leather collars are essentially nothing more than small leather belts, and a collar is a good introductory leather-working project, since it requires little skill or equipment to make. Whether you are making a collar for a dog, a cat or for someone, the process is the same.
Things You'll Need
- Tooling leather
- Craft knife
- Leather hole punch
- Small buckle
- Awl
- Leather needles and thread

1
Cut a long, thin rectangle of tooling leather (available at leather craft stores, along with all the tools and supplies needed for the collar) with your craft knife. The rectangle should be several inches longer than necessary so that it goes all the way around the neck, and it should be just wide enough to easily fit through the buckle.
-
2
Punch a hole in the leather 1/2-inch away from one end of the rectangle. This will be the end of the rectangle that the buckle attaches to.
-
-
3
Cut the other end of the rectangle into a rounded-off point, such as the end of a belt.
-
4
Fold over the punched 1/2-inch of the leather so that the hole you punched is on the fold, and the rough side of the leather is pressed against itself.
-
5
Thread the folded end of the leather through the buckle, starting from the underside on the side of the crossbar opposite from where the pin falls. Then go up over the crossbar and back down on the other side. The pin should be sticking through the punched hole, and if you pinch the folded end of the leather closed, the buckle should be securely held in the fold.
-
6
Poke stitching holes through both layers of leather with an awl and stitch the fold closed securely.
-
7
Punch a row of holes, each a 1/2-inch apart, in the leather, starting at about 1 inch away from the other end, and ending at about midpoint of the collar.
