How to Draw Pointed Toes

How to Draw Pointed Toes thumbnail
Many people consider the pointed toe to be a thing of beauty.

The human foot has long been a thing of beauty and contradiction for artists. The contradiction of the foot is evident when the artist observes the size of feet in comparison to the rest of the body; and the human foot in pointed toed stance is a true thing of beauty. The artist who understands what is happening in the foot to maintain the pointed toe stance will be delighted in the steps taken to best illustrate the stance. So before you undertake drawing the pointed toe stance, do the "leg work" so you can gain appreciation for the stance.

Select your subject. There are two ways to observe adults in the pointed toe position. The obvious way is the ballet dancer during a hypnotic dance routine. Another pointed toe stance in adults is doing exercises that require pointed toes for complete positioning. If you are good with children, their feet are the most natural because of the lack of shoe wear.

Choose a perspective from which to start your drawing. For some artists, the side view is preferred because the lines are smooth with an overly defined instep that has a seamless line from ankle to instep.

Draw lines starting from lower leg below the knee to ankle, then from the ankle to the tip of the toes. If you are drawing from a side view, the cross line should be from the top of heel to the ankle. If you are drawing from the front view, the line should start from the lower leg to the toes and the cross line should be from one ankle bone to the other. Don't forget to sketch in the outline of the toes.

Fill in the details using shading and shadowing. Detail the toes and any unique qualities your model's pointed toe stance has in your completed representation of the pointed toe stance.
