How to Clean Melted Candy

Cynthia Measom

Once a sugary piece of hard candy or a creamy chocolate bar transforms into a melted armor-like shell or a pile of sticky goo, a delectable delight no longer exists. Instead, a liability has resulted, that could stain your carpet, clothing or other belongings.

Tip

If you don't have an absorbent white cloth, use several paper towels as an alternative.

Warning

Some fabrics or carpets may not handle certain cleaning methods well. Test a small amount of the cleaning solution on an inconspicuous area of the fabric or carpet first to ensure discoloration and damage won't result.

Use the "Carpet" method to clean synthetic carpets only.

When cleaning melted candy, take into account the surface where the stain exists so you can attack the problem with the right tools.

Carpet Stains

  1. Scrape away as much of the melted candy from the carpet as possible with the edge of a dull knife.

  2. Pour 2 cups of warm water into a container. Add 1/2 tsp. of mild liquid dish soap. Stir the water with a spoon to create suds.

  3. Dip a section of an absorbent, white cloth into the soapy water to saturate it. Press the soapy, wet cloth onto the melted candy for approximately 30 seconds.

  4. Remove the cloth and wait 15 minutes for the stain to break down. Press a clean dry cloth to the area to blot up the moisture.

  5. Mix 1 cup of white vinegar with 2 cups of lukewarm water in a container. Agitate the water with your fingers to mix. Dip a portion of an absorbent cloth into the vinegar and water solution.

  6. Blot the previously treated area with the vinegar-soaked cloth to remove any detergent residue. Flip the cloth over and press it to the area for approximately 15 seconds. Allow to air dry.
