How to Make Your MacBook Talk in Funny Voices

The Mac has long had the ability to speak or read text in a choice of voices that can be made humorous by changing the speed and pitch of the tone. With Universal Access, you can make your MacBook speak the actions you make on the computer. While the VoiceOver utility is invaluable for the blind, it will speak your every move and can get annoying or obnoxious very quickly if you don't need it.

      Click the "Apple" in the "Finder" menu. Scroll to "System Preferences," and click the blue "Universal Access" button in the "System" pane.

      Click the "Seeing" button when the "Universal Access" dialogue box opens. Click the radio button next to "On" in the "VoiceOver" pane. Click the "VoiceOver Utility" button. Alternatively, press "Command" and the "F5" key to open the VoiceOver utility.

      Click the "Speech" microphone icon on the left panel of the "VoiceOver Utility" window, and then click the "Voices" tab if it's not already selected.

      Uncheck the "Mute Speech" box if it's checked.

      Click the drill-down button next to "Default Voice" to bring up the utility's options.

      Click the drill-down menu next to "Default Voice" to select a character voice for your MacBook. Some of the more humorous voices are "Bubbles," "Deranged," "Hysterical" or "Boing." There are 24 options to choose from.

      Click the up or down arrows in the "Rate" field to change the speed of the voice. Extreme ends of the rate spectrum such as "1" or "100" are often funniest. Make the pitch of the voice higher or lower by clicking the up or down arrows in the "Pitch" field. Make the voice louder or softer by changing the values in the "Volume" field.

      Click values in the "Content," "Status," "Type," "Attributes" or "VoiceOver Menu" boxes to define what and when you would like your voice to speak.

      Click the red button at the top left of the window to exit the utility. Click the red button at the top left of the "Universal Access" window to exit. The voice will speak the command selections you have chosen.

      Click the "Mute Speech" button in the "VoiceOver Utility" window to mute the voice.
