How to Draw a Puffer Fish
When learning how to draw, following a step-by-step tutorial will help you learn a variety of techniques and develop your artistic style. If you're learning how to sketch animals, start with simple-shaped creatures that are based on a geometric shape, such as the circular puffer fish. When a puffer fish feels threatened, it inflates itself to make it too hard for predators to swallow it.

1
Draw a circle on your paper. Either freehand sketch it or use a compass to make a more accurately shaped circle. This is the fish's body.
-
2
Add a straight line extending about two inches from the left side of your circle. This will become the tail.
-
-
3
Sketch an eye shape -- a larger circle with a smaller circle inside it -- in the top right-hand corner of the fish's body. Color in the inner circle to make it look like a fish's eyeball.
-
4
Add small fish "lips," on the right-hand side of the fish's body, that are parallel with the tail line you drew.
-
5
Draw a small fin on the inside of the puffer fish's body, in the center.
-
6
Use the tail line you drew as a guide to create the fish's tail. Draw a curved line from the top of the fish's body -- just above the tail line. Draw a second curved line from the bottom of the fish's body -- just below the tail line. Connect the two lines with a slight "C"-shaped back.
-
7
Add two curved fins on the tail.
-
8
Draw in spikes all along the puffer fish's belly.
-
9
Color in and decorate your fish as desired, to complete your drawing.
