You can knit a collection of small seashells into a scarf edging.

You can incorporate a collection of beautiful small seashells gathered on a vacation beach into the edging of a knitted scarf if you know the basics of how to knit. Use a small rotary drill to cut through the seashells neatly, creating a hole and allowing the seashells to be strung on the yarn strand. The end product will be a valued memento of a special time spent on the lake or ocean, and would make a thoughtful handmade gift.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a seashell in a bottle cap and cover it with water. Hold the seashell steady with a pencil eraser and drill a hole through the shell with a Dremel drill. Repeat with each seashell.

    • 2

String 25 seashells on the yarn and push them 36 inches down the yarn strand.

    • 3

Cast on 12 stitches with the yarn and your knitting needles.

    • 4

Knit one stitch and slide a seashell down the yarn strand next to the knitting needle. Repeat, until you've knitted all 25 seashells into the scarf edge.

    • 5

Continue knitting with the plain yarn until the scarf is 30 inches long. Cut the yarn with scissors, leaving a 5-inch tail.

    • 6

String the remaining 25 seashells onto the yarn strand. Tie the end of the strand to the 5-inch tail at the end of the scarf. Knit one, slide a seashell and repeat until all seashells have been incorporated into the scarf edge. Cast off.
