How to Play "GTA IV" Single Player Mode thumbnail
The single player mode in "Grand Theft Auto IV" provides hours of challenging fun.

Although "Grand Theft Auto IV" sounds like a game that heavily revolves around stealing cars, the game's missions rarely involve this particular felony. Throughout the storyline of "Grand Theft Auto IV," your character performs hits and other miscellaneous jobs for friends and clients. In single player mode, you have the freedom to wander around Liberty City as you please. The ultimate goal, however, is to complete missions and establish a new life for the main character. In order to endure your life as a criminal, you will need to learn a few key survival skills.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the game disc into your console. Wait for the game to load.

    • 2

Watch the opening cutscene, which details the story of Niko Bellic, an immigrant who comes to America in search of a new start.

    • 3

Complete the first mission, "The Cousins Bellic," which will familiarize you with the game's controls and features.

    • 4

Use the GPS feature to make traveling easier. Your destination appears as a dot on the GPS, and a colored line outlines a direct path to your destination.

    • 5

Use your cell phone to keep in touch with contacts. You will use your cell phone to initiate missions and keep in touch with friends and girlfriends.

    • 6

Travel to the various player icons to initiate additional missions. When you meet a character, his icon will appear on the map. As long as the character's icon appears on your map, you can visit him for a mission.

    • 7

Keep up with your friends and girlfriends by arranging dates. You can go out to eat, play games or go drinking with friends. Establishing good relationships with friends will unlock special privileges such as cab rides and health boosts.

    • 8

Stay off the police radar. If a cop spots you committing a crime, hop in a car and drive until you fall off his radar. A red and blue circle indicates the scope of the police radar, so your ultimate goal is to outrun the circle.

    • 9

Collect a large armory of weapons. Buy weapons from your local Ammunation store or from your friend Jacob. You can also lift weapons from the dead bodies of your enemies.

    • 10

Make money from missions and mini-games. Main storyline missions pay a hefty salary, but you can collect small wages by performing small tasks for your friends. Use your money to purchase clothes, weapons and food.
