How to Get Your Pyrotechnics License
Pyrotechnics is the art, study and practice of making and using fireworks. A pyrotechnician is one who practices the art of pyrotechnics, and pyrotechnicians must be licensed at least at the federal and state level. A lot of preparation and hard work go into a creating a successful fireworks display, and it takes the skill, training and talent of an experienced pyrotechnician to make sure it is carried out safely and spectacularly.

Apply to become a federal explosives licensee (FEL). Becoming an FEL involves a thorough background check, including fingerprints, photographs and an interview with an ATF investigator, but being a FEL is required for state and local licensure in almost all cases.

Research the experience, classroom and other license requirements to become a pyrotechnician in your state. Different states have significantly different requirements, and a few states, such as Michigan, do not require licensing at all.

Gain experience working on a crew with a licensed pyrotechnician for at least long enough to meet the minimum requirements for a pyrotechnics license in your state. Take any classes required for a pyrotechnics license in your state.

Apply to the appropriate agency become a licensed pyrotechnician in your state. The application will include another background check, proof of appropriate federal licensing, insurance and the appropriate number of classroom hours and amount of live firework show experience. In some states, such as California, you must also pass a written exam to receive a pyrotechnics exam.

Take and pass the state licensing exam for a pyrotechnics license as required. This exam will cover safe handling of fireworks and the laws and regulations regarding fireworks in your state.

Tips & Warnings
All states also require licensed pyrotechnicians to carry sufficient insurance in case of accidents. Proof of insurance is usually required as part of the licensing application procedure.
To transport the fireworks from the firework factory to the display grounds, you must have a Class C commercial driver's license with a hazardous materials endorsement, so you must also either have earned this license or pay someone who has to transport your fireworks.
Some cities and counties require additional licensing for fireworks display operators and almost all require a permit to put on a fireworks display.
