How to Make Autumn Fruit Compote

The more different dried fruits in this compote, the better. For purists, this dish is traditionally made with 12 different fruits, each representing one of the apostles. But hey, even atheists will gobble it up. Serves 12.

Things You'll Need:

  • 3 c. water
  • 1 unpeeled, thinly sliced orange
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 1 unpeeled, thinly sliced lemon
  • 1 c. seedless grapes
  • 1/2 c. raisins
  • 1/2 c. dried cherries
  • 1 c. sweet white wine
  • 1 lb. mixed dried fruit such as prunes, pears, apricots, peaches, apples or figs
  • 8 whole cloves
  • 4 cinnamon sticks

  1. Step 1

    Put the water and sugar in a large saucepan. Stir over medium heat until sugar dissolves.

  2. Step 2

    Put dried fruits, white wine, orange, lemon, raisins, dried cherries, cloves and cinnamon sticks in saucepan. Simmer for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until fruits are tender and liquid has reduced to a syrupy texture.

  3. Step 3

    Add grapes and cool mixture to room temperature.

  4. Step 4

    Cover tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate.

  5. Step 5

    Serve compote in long-stemmed goblets.

Tips & Warnings
  • The compote can be made up to three days ahead of time.
