How to Crochet Textures

On the crochet road to the bobble stitch.

Crochet textures provide playgrounds for the senses, lending visual appeal and stimulating touch. Crochet textures spice up an otherwise boring row of crochet for crafters. A fun and easy texture to crochet is the bobble, or popcorn, stitch. It looks just as it sounds -- like little bubbles rising up from the surface of finished crochet.

Instructions

    • 1

Single crochet until the end of row one, or the right side row. Turn the crochet piece. Chain one.

    • 2

Single crochet in the next stitch.

    • 3

Yarn over and push the crochet hook into the next stitch.

    • 4

Yarn over and pull a loop of yarn through the stitch.

    • 5

Yarn over and pull the yarn through two loops on the crochet hook, leaving two loops of yarn remaining on your crochet hook. You have just completed half of a double crochet.

    • 6

Yarn over and in the stitch you just used, repeat steps four and five.

    • 7

Repeat step six three more times.

    • 8

Yarn over and pull the yarn through the five loops on the crochet hook.

    • 9

Repeat steps three through nine until the end of the row. Turn.

    • 10

Repeat directions, in order, for as many rows of crochet as you want.

Tips & Warnings

  • Bobble stitch should always be worked on the wrong side row. You can use any number of double crochets to create the size of bobble stitch you want. Experiment with triple crochet for larger bobbles.

  • According to Craft Stylish, "Remember to stitch in the securing loop of each bobble" when working the single crochet stitch across the top of a bobble row.
